Start with the boring jobs: where AI really helps a B2B team

By Sophie Donald · 23 September 2026 · 5 minute read

Most conversations about AI in marketing and sales jump straight to the exciting stuff: AI that writes your content, AI that closes your deals. In our experience, the real wins for B2B marketing, sales and bid teams are much less glamorous. They're the repetitive, fiddly jobs that eat hours every week and that nobody got into the job to do.

Why the boring jobs are the right place to start

Boring jobs tend to be repetitive, rules-based and easy to check. That's exactly where AI is most reliable, and where a mistake is easy to spot before it causes a problem. They also free up the time your people should be spending on the work that actually needs them: thinking, writing, relationships and judgement.

Five jobs worth looking at

  • Reading tender packs. Pulling the sites, KPIs, SLAs, evaluation criteria and deadlines out of a pile of documents so your bid team starts from a clear summary, not a blank page.
  • Researching prospects. Gathering the basics on a target account before a call or a campaign, so conversations start from something relevant.
  • Tidying data. Cleaning up lead lists, matching records and spotting duplicates before they cause problems in your CRM or your outreach.
  • First drafts of routine content. Meeting summaries, internal updates and first passes at standard answers, trained on your tone of voice and always edited by a person.
  • Reporting. Turning numbers from different systems into a plain-English view of what's working and where to focus next.

Where people still matter most

AI is very good at getting you to a starting point quickly. It isn't good at knowing your clients, understanding the politics of a contract, or deciding what really matters to a buyer. So we keep a simple rule: AI does the heavy lifting, people make the calls. Anything that goes to a client or into a bid gets read and signed off by a person first.

That matters more than ever, as more buyers ask bidders how they use AI. Being able to say clearly what it does and doesn't do in your process is a strength, not a weakness.

How to get started

Pick one job. Write down how it's done today, step by step, and how long it takes. Then ask where the repetitive bits are, and what a good result looks like. That gives you something small enough to test properly, and a clear way to tell whether it's worth it.

It's also worth asking whether you need a new tool at all. Sometimes the answer is a simple automation between systems you already use; sometimes it's a small, bespoke assistant built around the way your team works. Starting from the job, rather than the technology, keeps you from buying software you don't need.
